James Barbour, Governor of Virginia, was born on June 10, 1775, near Gordonsville in Orange County, Virginia. Governor Barbour, an attorney, began his public service career as deputy sheriff of Orange County. He was a member of the Virginia House of Delegates from 1796 to 1812, and served as speaker from 1809 to 1812. He patroned the legislation creating the Virginia Literary Fund which provides public funding for public education in the Commonwealth. In 1812, he was elected Governor of Virginia and served from 1812 to 1814, during the American War of 1812. He was the first Governor to reside in the current Virginia Governor's Mansion.

Even though there were warnings of an impending attack, the government was unprepared for the disaster of August 24, 1814. The destruction by British forces of the nation’s capital was a very small part of the War of 1812, but it’s significance to the country was tremendous. The torching of Washington rallied the people. Join author and historian, Carole L. Herrick, for a detailed look into the events of August 1814. Mrs. Herrick will have copies of her book available for sale. It commemorates Monroe's roles during the War of 1812. Highlighted in this show will be new acquisitions belonging to the one American statesman who served in more high public offices than any other President!

The United Kingdom and Canada, which were involved in the War of 1812; several NATO countries; the U.S. Coast Guard; the U.S. Army; and other nations with tall ships are partners in the commemoration.

In recognition of the British invasion of Hampton Roads, the Commission is planning a water tour that will follow the trail of the Chesapeake Bay military encounters with the British on the Virginia side.
June 2014
Plans for a significant two-day symposium are being developed as a concluding signature event for the Virginia bicentennial commemoration of the War of 1812. The Commission's Legacy Symposium will be hosted by Fort Monroe in June 2014.
June 2015
Deliberations are ongoing concerning the collaboration with the State of Ohio to erect an historical marker at Fort Meigs, a War of 1812 battlefield in Perrysburg, Ohio, to honor Virginia's fallen who are buried at the site by June 2015. Several of the Virginia veterans were members of the Petersburg Volunteers, a company of young men from Dinwiddie, Amelia, and Chesterfield who fought in the Battle of Fort Meigs during the War of 1812 under General William Henry Harrison. Research is also under way, in cooperation with the U. S. National Park Service to highlight the role and contributions of African Americans during the war.

Through the use of an interactive map of historical markers throughout the Commonwealth, citizens will be able to visit War of 1812-related sites. The Trail is designed to promote education, tourism, and economic development.

Legislation authorizing a special license plate to commemorate the bicentennial of the War of 1812 has been passed by the General Assembly and will be available for purchase after July 1, 2011.

A commemorative brochure to announce the bicentennial in Virginia has been approved by the Commission. The brochure is the premiere of a more detailed and elaborate map of War of 1812-related sites in Virginia that will be designed and distributed throughout the Commonwealth to promote publicity and tourism for the bicentennial.
The Commission is working with the Virginia War Museum Foundation in the production of a documentary, traveling exhibit, and the publication of a book to provide supplemental materials for students and teachers.
