ISLE OF WIGHT, Va. – At 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 3, at the Isle of Wight County Museum, local living historian Rob Friar will discuss the War of 1812, its background, causes and repercussions – primarily focusing on the Battle of Craney Island, a victory for the U.S. which saved Norfolk from British invasion.

Dr. Gene Allen Smith, professor of history and director of the Center for Texas Studies at Texas Christian University will discuss his most recent book, The Slaves' Gamble: Choosing Sides in the War of 1812 at Ash Lawn-Highland on Friday, February 22. The book explores the history-changing decisions made by African-American combatants in the crucial conflict, and how the opportunity to fight changed the course of slavery in America. Co-sponsored by Dan Preston, editor of the Papers of James Monroe. A book signing immediately follows Dr. Smith's discussion. 4PM at Ash Lawn-Highland. Free and open to the public. Presented in celebration of Black History Month 2013.

Speaker: Stuart L. Butler. His topic will be War of 1812 with a focus on Hanover County and King William Militia units and where they served. Stuart was our speaker last March. He authored and published A Guide to Virginia Militia Units in the War of 1812 in 2011 and has just published his latest book Defending the Old Dominion: Virginia and Its Militia in the War of 1812. To celebrate James Monroe's 254th birthday, Ashlawn-Highland will open an exhibit on Saturday, April 28th, "A Senior Statesman at War: James Monroe and the Second War of Independence, 1812-1815." It commemorates Monroe's roles during the War of 1812. Highlighted in this show will be new acquisitions belonging to the one American statesman who served in more high public offices than any other President!

Stuart L. Butler will discuss the effects of Virginia's politics and military on the War of 1812 within the commonwealth and the United States. Defending the Old Dominion examines the role of Virginia's militia in the War of 1812, outlining the militia's lack of preparedness, lack of adequate ordnance and arms, and how that affected its ability to defend the state against the British during the war. The author also will share the fascinating story of nearly 2,000 former slaves who fled to British ships to fight in Virginia with British forces.

The dedication of the historical highway marker to honor First Lady Dolley Payne Todd Madison and the Presidential Wreath Laying Ceremony for President James Madison at Montpelier will kick-off Virginia's bicentennial commemoration of the War of 1812. The Commission will attend the event and present a wreath.

In January 2012, the Commission will collaborate with the Richmond Symphony to host a symphonic tribute featuring period music at CentreStage in Richmond.
June 1-12, 2012
OpSail Virginia 2012 will be held on June 1-12, 2012, in Hampton Roads, one of only five U.S. ports of call to host the bicentennial event and commemorate the birth of The Star-Spangled Banner. The United Kingdom and Canada, which were involved in the War of 1812; several NATO countries; the U.S. Coast Guard; the U.S. Army; and other nations with tall ships are partners in the commemoration.
August 2012
Plans are under development to memorialize the invasion of the British in Washington, D.C. and the subsequent burning of the White House and other federal buildings, as well as the British occupation of Alexandria in August 2014.
June 2013
In recognition of the British invasion of Hampton Roads, the Commission is planning a water tour that will follow the trail of the Chesapeake Bay military encounters with the British on the Virginia side.
June 2014
Plans for a significant two-day symposium are being developed as a concluding signature event for the Virginia bicentennial commemoration of the War of 1812. The Commission's Legacy Symposium will be hosted by Fort Monroe in June 2014.
June 2015
Deliberations are ongoing concerning the collaboration with the State of Ohio to erect an historical marker at Fort Meigs, a War of 1812 battlefield in Perrysburg, Ohio, to honor Virginia's fallen who are buried at the site by June 2015. Several of the Virginia veterans were members of the Petersburg Volunteers, a company of young men from Dinwiddie, Amelia, and Chesterfield who fought in the Battle of Fort Meigs during the War of 1812 under General William Henry Harrison. Research is also under way, in cooperation with the U. S. National Park Service to highlight the role and contributions of African Americans during the war.

Trail is designed to promote education, tourism, and economic

Legislation authorizing a special license plate to commemorate the
bicentennial of the War of 1812 has been passed by the General Assembly and
will be available for purchase after July 1, 2011.

A commemorative brochure to announce the bicentennial in Virginia has been approved by the Commission. The brochure is the premiere of a more detailed and elaborate map of War of 1812-related sites in Virginia that will be designed and distributed throughout the Commonwealth to promote publicity and tourism for the bicentennial.
The Commission is working with the Virginia War Museum Foundation in the production of a documentary, traveling exhibit, and the publication of a book to provide supplemental materials for students and teachers.
